With the arrival of the Mylius 48 Zenhea Takesha owned by Natale Lia (CVS), there are already 53 entries for the XV edition of the Palermo-Montecarlo, the offshore regatta that will start on next August 21 from the Gulf of Mondello, with the organization of the Circolo della Vela Sicily, Challenger of Record for the next America's Cup alongside the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team, in collaboration with the Yacht Club de Monaco and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Last year the boats were 54 on the starting line, a number destined to be exceeded in this edition that promises great performance, especially given the level of the constantly growing registered boats for the next Palermo-Montecarlo.
Among the Maxis, the presence of last year's line honors winner Rambler 88, the Maxi owned by the American George David stands out alongside the participation of 82' Vera, SHK Scallywag owned by David Witt, a 100-foot monohull (more than 30 meters) coming from Hong Kong, the 72-foot Reichel & Pugh Aragon and the Volvo 72 Green Dragon.
Among the smaller but no less competitive boats, we find out many well-known names of the italian offshore like Enrico Calvi's Duffy, Alessandro Burzi's Globulo Rosso, Alessio Bernabò's Crossing Routes Vaquita, Andrea Casini's Quattrogatti and Simone Taiuti's Mùzyka2, not to mention the ICE 52 Primavista-Lauria, skippered by the local Gabriele Bruni from Palermo.
Fundamental stage both of the Italian Offshore Championship organized by the Italian Sailing Federation and of the Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge organized by the International Maxi Association, the departure of the Palermo-Montecarlo, which can count on the support of the Fondazione Sicilia and the partner Tasca d'Almerita, is scheduled for Wednesday 21 August. After having left the Gulf of Mondello behind, the fleet will have to sail more than 500 miles until the arrival off the Principality of Monaco (passing through a "gate" in front of Porto Cervo, in Sardinia), racing to conquer the two challenge trophies up for grabs, in addition to the class prizes: the Giuseppe Tasca d'Almerita Trophy will award the first hull across the finish line in real time, and the Angelo Randazzo Trophy for the winner in compensated time of the most numerous group among the two classes admitted by the Notice of Race (ORC International and IRC).
Also this year the Circolo della Vela Sicilia will provide participants with containers to be loaded and sent by land by the organization directly to Montecarlo. A precious and exclusive service that will allows the crews to go back to their port of departure or to continue for a holiday on the French Riviera without having to return to Sicily to retrieve the material left.
