The Palermo-Montecarlo Regatta is one of the most prestigious high sea
races of the Mediterranean sea. It belongs to numerous international circuits
such as: ‘Trofeo d’altura del Mediterraneo’; ‘Campionato Italiano Off-Shore’;
‘Trofeo Armatore’ of the year and ‘Le Championnat et Trophees Inshore et
Offshore Mediterranee en Equipages-IRC’. In 2015 it was added to the IMA
circuit - Mediterranean Maxi Off-shore Challenge, which brings together the
‘Rolex Middle Sea Race’, the ‘Volcano Race’ and the ‘Giraglia Rolex Club’.
Born in 2005, as a wish of the Principality of Monaco Consul and the Sport
Department of the Municipality of Palermo to unify two historically related
cities, the Regatta offers a highly technical and picturesque race to all sailing
enthusiasts.
There are plenty of world-renowned sailing boats which, throughout the
years, have set off from the beautiful and colourful Gulf of Mondello, in order
to cross ‘Le Bocche di Bonifacio’ (the Strait of Bonifacio) to ultimately reach
‘La Baia Di Monaco’ (Monaco’s Bay). Starting with the ‘Steinlager’, the
glorious winner of the Whitbread, followed by the super maxis Eismit Europa
2 and Senso One and many others.
Pluri-olympic sailors, protagonists of the hardest and most important
transoceanic Regattas of the world and competitors in America’s Cup, have
added prestige and value to the Regatta, allowing an exponential growth of
the number and valour of its participants. To name a few of these: Mauro
Pelaschier, Pietro D'Alì, Francesco De Angelis, Gabriele Bruni, Flavio Favini,
Lorenzo Bressani, Tommaso Chieffi, Alberto Bolzan, Jochen Schuemann,
Lionel Pean, Philippe Monet, Mitch Booth e Catherine Chaboud; the list is
immense!
The Regatta record is held by Igor Simic’s maxi Eismit Europa 2, who took
part to many other editions, and which, in 2015, with a time of 47hrs - 46mins-
48secs, broke the previous record of one hour and fifteen minutes.
The Palermo-Montecarlo Regatta is getting ready to experience another
spectacular edition: the ‘XIII’ edition to be held between the 21st and 26th of
August 2017!
